Italian associations call to legalize surrogacy based on the ‘international coalition for surrogacy ethics’ that emerged from MHB’s Brussels conference

On September 27th, 2016, following their participation in MHB’s Second Annual Conference on Parenting Options for European Gay Men, four Italian associations announced their support for the “international coalition for surrogacy ethics” that was formed at the Brussels conference. The four include Famiglie Arcobaleno (Italy’s LGBT parenting association), Associazione Luca Coscioni, Associazione Radicale Certi Diritti, and UAAR. They joined several other organizations from the USA, Europe and Israel that already endorsed MHB’s set of 12 parameters for the ethical use of surrogacy that were developed in collaboration with an advisory committee comprised of surrogate mothers.*

Brussels conference offers European gay men hope of parenting through surrogacy and adoption in the USA and Canada

The “Parenting Options for European Gay Men” conference, hosted by the NY based organization “Men Having Babies”, attracted more than 200 prospective gay fathers from 10 countries, and also garnered intense media attention. The conference served to raise awareness of limited domestic parenting options for European gay men, amid increasing political debates across Belgium, France, and the Netherlands regarding surrogacy and assisted reproduction legislation.

MHB's Brussels conference attracts unprecedented media attention, sparking debate about surrogacy and gay parenting

Our “Parenting Options for European Gay Men” conference held in Brussels May 2-3 attracted more than 200 prospective gay dads from 10 countries, and intense media attention. This came amid increasing political debates across Belgium, France, and the Netherlands regarding surrogacy and assisted reproduction legislation. While criticism came from both the right and left sides of the political spectrum, we had our say through numerous interviews with our board members, the surrogates who came with us form the USA, European parents and conference attendees.
