The Men Having Babies Annual Conferences

- Becoming a sponsor (2019)

Why support Men Having Babies?

Men Having Babies organizes 6-8 annual conferences, in NY, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami / Ft. Lauderdale, Brussels, Taipei, Toronto and Tel Aviv, each with 150-250 attendees. These attendees benefit from unbiased guidance and access to a wide range of relevant service providers. Proceeds from conference sponsorship fees benefit our Gay Parenting Assistance Program (GPAP).

Consider this:
  • Each year our conferences are sponsored by over 70 different surrogacy services providers from the USA, Canada and Israel.
  • Our surveys show that more than 58% of our USA members are from households that make over $200k annually; 73% of European and 95% of Americans are from households the make more than $100k; and over 70% of all of them hold graduate degrees.
  • In 2018 we generated more than 1600 consult referrals to providers who took part in our conferences or GPAP.
  • Our assistance program keeps growing. About 200 couples annually receive substantial discounts from participating providers, and 18-20 couples benefit from direct assistance, including grants and free services donated by those providers (“Stage II”). More than 30 babies were already born to Stage II parents, and many more are on their way.

We also offer one-day conferences in Toronto and Tel Aviv, in partnership with local organizations. Let us know if you are interested and we will be happy to share more information.

Note: Important new rules for 2019:

  • Starting August 1, 2018, MHB’s Provider Directory will only include service providers that are either conference sponsors or those who participate in our Gay Parenting Assistance Program (GPAP). 2018 sponsors will remain on the directory until December 31, 2018, unless they sign up for a 2019 conference or renew their GPAP pledge.

  • All Surrogacy Agencies (or representatives of surrogacy agencies) and Clinics that wish to participate at our conferences and the Gay Parenting Assistance Program are required to state explicitly that they offer surrogacy services adhering to the MHB’s Baseline Protocols, as spelled out in our Ethical Framework.

Sponsorship options

Rates for available sponsorship levels for the 2019 conference can be viewed in the Sponsorship Options Table. These levels are especially suitable for clinics, surrogacy and / or egg donation agencies, and law firms.

Providers of
complimentary / third party services (escrow services, pharmacies, insurance providers, cord blood preservation, etc.) are also invited to participate. We offer a range of promotion and underwriting options, some reserved exclusively to 3rd party service providers (see page 2 of the above document). To take advantage of these options, a provider needs to sign up for at least a “Non-exhibiting Bronze” option.

With the help of our expanded talented staff, we continue to improve our programs and streamline the coordination and production process of our conferences to everyone’s benefit. We continue to listen to feedback from attendees and providers, and our 2019 conferences will incorporate several changes to the standard conference agenda and sponsorship package.

The main change is that our 2019 conference will typically start on Saturday morning, which will be (instead of Sunday) the main day for outreach activities: intro announcements, expo and breakout sessions. Sunday will only have a half day of programs, dedicated to in-depth panels: medical, budgeting / insurance, and Q&A sessions. This should allow people time to travel back home on Sunday. Note also that we will be holding the welcome event for sponsors on the Friday night before the conference.

A few additional changes we implemented in the sponsorship package are also noted in page 2 of the
Sponsorship Options Table.

Please note:

• We have one set of fees for the NY, San Francisco and Brussels events, and a separate one for Taipei, Chicago and Fort Lauderdale.
• You will be eligible for 5% frequency discount off conference fees (beyond applicable GPAP related discounts) when you simultaneously sign up at once for:
  • 3 or more Gold / Platinum conferences OR
  • 2 Gold/Platinum + 2 Silver - OR -
  • 1 Gold/Platinum + 4 Silver

About the 2019 Taipei conference on Parenting Options for Asian Gay Men :

We have been thinking for a while about the best way reach out to Asian prospective parents. We are all aware that the influx of Asian IPs to the USA and Canada has already changed the landscape considerably, while many of them had no access to our educational events and philosophy. This became more urgent with the proliferation of mediators that often encourage behaviors that are very different from our best practices.

After much research and consideration, we are confident that Taipei is not just the best place for our conference, but also one that would offer an effective bridgehead to the entire region. Taiwan has a very mature LGBT community with at least three major organizations that are eager to partner with us. We think it will provide a solid local base to support significant attendance, yet it is also well positioned to attract a good number of IPs from Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia and maybe even Australia. LGBT Asians across the region look at Taiwan as the model of LGBT progress, and the regional center for community resources.

As we made our decision we had to take into consideration regulatory and political risks, cultural attitudes, potential public relations scenarios, and of course costs.

We made great progress last January in SF, where we attracted a large group of Asians / Asian-Americans, some of whom joined us in the discovery and planning. We were also fortunate to find Andrew Li, a Chinese-American who joined our board and led much of this effort.

Beyond much research and consultations throughout the spring of 2018, we also embarked on an extensive discovery tour. We attended Shanghai Pride events (including a modest “LGBT Family Forum”), met with representatives of several LGBT organizations and gay professional networks in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, consulted lawyers and government official in those locations, and held two informational sessions with dozens of IPs in Shanghai and Taipei (see photo collage). We also visited countless hotels to scout for appropriate venues, and met with travel agencies to clarify options for mainland Chinese to Taipei.

Following our decision to hold the conference in Taipei we were fortunate to be able to secured a terrific site, The W Taipei, the location of a large annual Pride celebration, and home to the WET Bar, a favorite of the LGBT community. We also launched a 6 month promotion plan that includes joint outreach and probably at least two feeder events (Shanghai and HK) with organizations and professional networks we contacted. We also partnered for this campaign with the leading Asian LGBT social networking, media and production company who’s owner is an MHB alumni.

We hope you will join us for this historic event!
