Panelists include:

Noah Long
I and Murphy have been together for ten years since we first met in the beginning of 2009. We live in Guangzhou now with our child James. We heard about surrogacy in the US through a PFLAG "being dads sharing” event in 2011, in Guangzhou. Then we started in 2012. James was born in 2015 in Pittsburgh. We are now working on creating our second child.

Sean Chuang
Sean, whose mother worked as nanny while he was growing up, has been living in a home where there have always been babies or toddlers around. Therefore a seed of becoming a dad was planted in his mind ever since when he was a high school teenager. In 2015 he felt ready for the surrogacy journey and contacted a US-based surrogacy agency. A journey filled with emotions and affections thus began. In the autumn of 2017 his son was born in sunny California. Though being as nervous as a new dad could be, he enjoyed that one month stay in the United States with his son. After coming back to Taiwan, he was connected with a local group of gay dads and hopes his experience will encourage more gay people desiring parenthood to realize their dream.

Alejandra Santana
Alejandra is from San Diego. She is a Mom, a student currently pursuing her MBA, and a full-time employee in the healthcare field. Alejandra is a two-time surrogate, first to a gay couple from San Francisco., and she is currently matched with a single man from Spain and is awaiting her medical clearance. She had her husband have been married for 7 years and are proud parents of two beautiful girls, ages 6 and 3. Alejandra is proud to be part of the surrogacy community and finds it to be one of the most rewarding and humbling experience of her life.

Shelly Marsh

Shelly is a three time surrogate. She carried twin boys for a gay couple from the Norway, and two singletons for a gay couple from Los Angeles. She and her husband Brian live in CA with their two daughters. She currently serves as MHB’s marketing manager.

Elinor Poole-Dayan
Elinor is 18 years old and a senior in high school in the Bronx, New York. She was born through gestational surrogacy to Ron and Greg. She has a twin brother and 4 pet chickens. Elinor has previously spoken on MHB’s teen panels in New York and Florida.

A mindful look at surrogacy - Attitudes and Ethics: 6:00 - 7:00 PM (Mega 2-3, 8th Floor)
In this session we will examine how we feel about surrogacy: the meanings and significance people tend to attribute to surrogacy in their lives, with a special focus on surrogates’ perspective. We will look at questions such as:
  • What are the dominant social perceptions of surrogacy in Asia-Pacific countries and the U.S.?
  • How do surrogates understand their experiences?
  • What are the roots for concerns about exploitation and commodification in surrogacy?
  • What are the experiences of children born via surrogacy?
We will present recent research on surrogacy, and evidence from studies about the way surrogacy affects the the welfare of the child, the surrogate, and her family. We will also look at programs meant to encourage a more mindful surrogacy experience, such as MHB's Framework for Ethical Surrogacy.
